Munay Illary

Munay Illary was born in 2025 with a clear purpose: to decolonize tourism and offer a completely different way of experiencing Peru. Our name, Munay Illary, means Love for the Dawn—because every morning offers a chance to be born anew, and every journey can be a genuine connection with a place and its people.

I am the founder. Behind this new venture lies over a decade of experience working directly with Andean communities, families in the jungle lowlands, local artisans, and travelers from around the world who were searching for something deeper than a postcard. Munay Illary is the result of that journey, a fresh start built on years of learning, respect, and the conviction that tourism can be a force for good.

Our Story – A New Beginning with Deep Roots

For years, I guided and managed tours in Cusco. I witnessed how conventional tourism often treated communities as scenery and the environment as an afterthought. I knew there had to be a better way—one where local families are partners, not props, and where travelers leave with more than just photos.

That’s why Munay Illary was created in 2025: to break with the old models and offer a truly authentic, community‑driven alternative. We started from scratch with a clear philosophy: work directly with families, respect their autonomy, and design private experiences that honor ancestral knowledge. No intermediaries. No staged performances. Just real encounters between travelers and the living culture of Peru.

Our Mission & Vision

Mission
To offer authentic, private travel experiences that honor the cultures, communities, and natural environments of Cusco. We work directly with local families, practice eco‑friendly tourism, and uphold Ayni—reciprocity—so that every journey leaves a positive impact on both travelers and the places they visit.

Vision
To inspire a new way of traveling—one where tourism becomes a tool for cultural preservation, environmental care, and mutual growth. We envision a world where every traveler seeks connection over consumption, and every community is respected as a partner, not a product.

What Makes Us Different

We are not a conventional tour operator. Everything we do is guided by three core principles that shape every experience we design.

Decolonizing Tourism
We work directly with indigenous and local communities, respecting their autonomy, traditions, and ways of life. Your visit is a genuine exchange, not a performance. You learn ancestral weaving from the grandmothers, plant native potatoes alongside farmers, prepare your own coffee with growers in the jungle, and listen to stories that have been passed down for generations.

Eco-Friendly by Nature
We believe in traveling lightly. We eliminated single‑use plastics from our operations, manage waste responsibly, support local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint, and choose routes that protect fragile ecosystems. Being eco‑friendly is not a marketing label—it is a daily practice.

Ayni – Reciprocity
Ayni is the Quechua concept of reciprocal exchange. For us, it means that every journey you take with us gives back: to the families who welcome you, to the artisans who share their craft, and to the small cat rescue shelter we maintain. When you travel with Munay Illary, you become part of a cycle of mutual support.

Pet Lovers with a Purpose

Our love for animals is not just a slogan. We run a small rescue shelter for cats in Cusco, providing them with care, food, and love. Part of your contribution helps sustain this shelter and supports other local animal welfare organizations.

If you travel with your pet, we have safe spaces to care for them while you explore areas where they can’t join. We also offer pet‑friendly tours on selected off‑the‑beaten‑path routes, so your furry companion can be part of the adventure.

Artisan Boutique – A Bridge Between You and Local Hands

Our boutique is more than a shop. It is a space where local artisans display their work directly—textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and more. They set their own prices, and every purchase supports their family economy without middlemen. By choosing to buy here, you are helping preserve ancestral techniques and ensuring that the value stays with the creators.

The Team Behind Munay Illary

We are a small, dedicated team of local guides, community liaisons, and logistics professionals who share a deep commitment to responsible travel. Many of us grew up in the communities we work with, and we bring that firsthand knowledge to every tour. We are not just employees; we are partners in a shared vision of tourism that uplifts everyone involved.
